Questions about the operation / handling of an aquarium with the TRITON method

Base Elements, Core7 and Supplements

/

What maintenance do I have on the filter?

Activated carbon and phosphate remover should be changed monthly, the skimmer should be cleaned regularly, the algae should be cut back regularly and mud in the refugium should be siphoned out every 3-6 months

Is it possible to use sand in the filter?

No, only live rock and algea should be in the filter, the ground has to stay clean.

What should I consider when mixing the Base Elementz?

The Base Elementz are each diluted with 9 liters of RO/DI water. 3A and 3B may be diluted together with 8 liters of RO/DI water, please first dissolve 3A and afterwards dilute 3B. However, we recommend to dose Base Elementz 3A and 3B, if possible, separately.

Can I dose the Base Elementz by hand or do I need a dosing pump?

Yes, however, if the dosing amount becomes higher, we recommend a multiple dosing throughout the day.

How long can I store the Base Elementz?

You can store them in a cool and dark place over 5 years.

Base Element 1 does not dissolve completely, what should I do?

The water for the solution should be warmed and a little pump would make it much easier to dissolve.

What do I have to dose furthermore when running TRITON?

You do not need any other liquids like amino acids, bacteria etc. If you do like to dose anything else, you can do so but keep in mind that this is an experimental procedure and should be checked by additional water analyses.

Do I have to feed my corals when running TRITON?

No, feeding is not mandatory. At very low nutrient tanks or when keeping mainly LPS, this can be tried. In this case we would recommend additional water analyses.

How do I dissolve the Base Elementz concentrate?

With RO/DI water, which is also used for aquarium top up when running TRITON.

How much water do I have to take out?

Here you find a calculator that calculates the amount of water that should be taken out. Please remind that water should only be taken out of the system when the salinity is rising.

Where should I dose the Base Elementz?

The best place would be a part in the aquarium where is a lot of current or in the sump (eg close to the return pump), there should be some time between the dosage of the different Base Elementz.

How much do I have to dose of the Trace Base?

Can I use other products as Trace Base after the evaluation to change the values?

Only if you have the chemical ability to mix the elements, you can do with the data obtained by us like this. However, we do not recommend it if you do not have a high degree of chemical knowledge. Products from other manufacturers are not compatible with our analysis, since we do not know what concentration and purity which exists.

What is the optimum alkalinity when running TRITON method?

Optimum would be 6.5-7dKH. However, we recommend our customers to adjust the KH to 8 because of a standard measurement error of approx. 1dKH.  If you get used to the TRITON method and feel safe, you can also seek a value of 6,5-7dKH.

For what kind of aquarium is the evaluation made for? (red/yellow/green)

The basis of this evaluation and our stated target values are measurements that we carried out in the oceans worldwide. Our philosophy is that we try to imitate the habitat of our animals as much as possible. How critical certain value is, depends on the level of aquariums system. Therefore, we try to do the evaluation for aquariums with a very high level (corresponding to the TRITON display aquarium). In fish aquariums or soft coral aquariums eg an increased Cu value (over 10 ppb) in red, but should not be dangerous in this type of aquarium.

Can I get my water anayzed anywhere else than TRITON?

No, TRITON is a very specialized business and the measurement technique is unique to the seawater aquaristic. We have done a lot of research to collect the information that will enable our company to carry out not only the measurement but also to enable afterward applicable results with the output values.

Especially when the TRITON method is used, the water should not be analyzed anywhere else. All TRITON products that should possibly be dosed are calculated based on the evaluation. If this is missing, it is hard to work with the Trace Base products.

How often do I have to get a TRITON water analysis done?

Every 1-3 months an ICP-OES anaylis should be performed when running the TRITON method. We recommend in bigger systems and in systems with very sensitive live stock to perform water tests more regularly.

How to check KH, Ca and salinity?

With refractometer and normal droplet tests that are easy to use.

What should I check myself when running TRITON?

The carbonate hardness should be measured every day when starting to dose the Base Elementz. When the KH is more stable, you should check every 3 days.

The salinity should be checked once a week. Calcium can be checked every 1-2 weeks.

What is the best way to rinse AL99 and TRITON Carbon?

The best way is to place both filter media in RO water and wait until the chemical reaction is over, about half an hour, after that the dust is rinsed with RO water and the filter media is ready for use. Please never rinse with tap water.

Do I have to rinse AL99 and TRITON Carbon before usage?

Yes, both filter media should be rinsed with ultrapure water before usage.

Which type of algae is the best?

You should start with Chaetomorpha sp., later every kind of algae is welcome.

How strong should I light the algae?

We recommend a T5 lighting of 0,06W to 0,08W per litre of the display tank`s volume.

How long should the algae be lit?

We recommend a lighting of 12 hours, maximum 14 hours, reverse lit to the lighting of the display tank.

Which lighting is recommended for the algae?

The algae should be lit with white and blue T5. We don`t recommend to use LED.

How should I run PO4 remover and carbon?

The best way is to use a fluidized bed filter, like a Zeolithreaktor. The material should not move but the flow should still be strong enough. First use the carbon, then the phosphate remover.

How often do I change the phosphate remover and carbon?

Approx. 1x per month in the specified amounts.

How big should the algae sump be?

The bigger, the better. We recommend 10-20% of the display tank.

How often do I have to harvest the algae?

If it grows more, it should be harvested more. One quickly becomes accustomed to the right amount and the right intervals. Important is that the algae does not die off because of becoming too big.

How do I filter the aquarium?

The TRITON method is based on algae filtration and skimmer. Here you find all information for the construction.

Which salt do I use when I need salt water? I.e. new fish, siphoning etc.

At the moment we recommend Tropic Marin Pro Reef salt. Momentan empfehlen wir Tropic Marin Pro Reef Salz, may be added other types of salt in the future.

How do I produce „Ultrapure water“?

The TRITON method presets how Ultrapure water is produced. This can be read here.

Is there a minimum size for a tank?

With TRITON method there is no minimum size. But also with TRITON method very small tanks are difficult to thrive stable.

How much current do I need?

This strongly depends on the livestock. SPS corals need a big amount of current.

How strong has to be the return pump?

10x per hour the tank volume should be circulated.

How strong should the skimmer be?

A strong skimmer like recommended for SPS tanks is the right for TRITON method.
